3. When it distracts from what God has called me to do.

I cannot do everything or be everywhere. I can only do what I can do. There is nothing wrong with taking assignments just because I want to do them. If, however, they are going to get in the way of my ultimate calling, the right answer—the often difficult but brave answer—is to say no.

A couple of times I have been given opportunities to do a side part-time job for our denomination or another Christian ministry. It is always something that would fit well with my strengths and interests. It is something I would enjoy doing. But leading a large, established church, plus the speaking and writing commitments I already have, take all the energy I have to give. Understanding this does not take away the interest I may have in the position, but it makes saying no easier.
